Costume and Concept

Cinna, Katniss's stylist, rejects the traditional coal-miner costume that had made District 12 tributes forgettable. Instead, he and Portia, Peeta's stylist, design complementary costumes that focus on coal's essence: burning. Katniss wears a simple black unitard and knee-high leather boots, but the defining elements are a cape and headpiece made of streams of orange, yellow, and red fabric. Cinna plans to ignite these with synthetic fire just before the chariot enters the streets. Katniss initially fears she will be "perfectly barbecued," but Cinna assures her the flame is not real. As the chariot, pulled by coal-black horses, rolls into the City Circle in the deepening twilight, Cinna ignites the capes and headdresses. The crowd's initial alarm turns to cheers and shouts of "District Twelve!" Every head turns toward them, pulling focus from the three chariots ahead. Katniss catches sight of them on a large television screen and is floored by how breathtaking they look: the firelight illuminates their faces, and they seem to leave a trail of fire off their flowing capes. Cinna's minimal makeup makes them both more attractive but utterly recognizable. Katniss lifts her chin, puts on her most winning smile, and waves, even blowing kisses to the crowd. The people of the Capitol go "nuts," showering them with flowers and shouting their first names. The Hand-Holding and Its Meaning

Cinna's last instruction before they enter the city is for them to hold hands. Peeta grabs Katniss's right hand in his left, and they maintain this grip throughout the ride. Katniss holds so tightly that she nearly stops the circulation in Peeta's hand. When she loosens her grasp, he regains his grip, saying, "No, don't let go of me. Please. I might fall out of this thing." Katniss keeps holding on but feels strange about the way Cinna has linked them, noting it is not fair to present them as a team and then lock them into the arena to kill each other. Later, Haymitch Abernathy identifies the hand-holding as "the perfect touch of rebellion," distinguishing them from other couples who stand stiffly apart, as if the Games had already begun. Presenting themselves as friends rather than adversaries, combined with the fiery costumes, makes them unforgettable.

Immediate Aftermath and Significance

The chariot parade ends at President Snow's mansion, where the president gives the official welcome. The cameras hold on the District 12 chariot far more than any other, and as it parades around the City Circle one final time and disappears into the Training Center, Katniss knows they have "literally outshone them all." The other tributes shoot them dirty looks. Cinna and Portia help them down, and Portia extinguishes the capes with a spray. Peeta tells Katniss, "You should wear flames more often. They suit you," and gives her a smile that sends unexpected warmth through her. A warning bell goes off in her head—she reminds herself that Peeta is planning how to kill her—but she stands on tiptoe and kisses his cheek, right on his bruise.
